About the Family
A professional, busy private family of three in Rochester, Michigan, is seeking an exceptional Household Manager / Family Assistant to take end-to-end ownership of household operations. The household includes two working parents – one who works from home but is largely unavailable during the day – and a middle-school-aged child who thrives in a calm, structured environment. The family also has a friendly, fully trained 1.5-year-old mini poodle.
The family values discretion, critical thinking, professionalism, and a proactive mindset. They are seeking someone who operates independently, anticipates needs, and takes pride in solving problems before they arise.
The family also maintains a secondary residence overseen by a professional property management company. While no travel is required, this role includes coordination with the property management team as needed to ensure the home is prepared in advance of family visits.
There is a part-time housekeeper who works approximately three days per week (about 18 hours).
Responsibilities
This role is best described as “owning the household,” rather than assisting task-by-task, and requires foresight, independent judgment, and accountability. The Household Manager / Family Assistant serves as the operational engine of the home, ensuring it runs smoothly, efficiently, and calmly at all times.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-
Taking full ownership of daily household operations, logistics, and organization
-
Proactively anticipating needs and addressing them before they become issues (e.g., preparing for travel departures and returns, restocking supplies, maintaining systems)
-
Managing and coordinating household vendors and service providers, including selecting and hiring vendors for certain projects
-
Building, implementing, and maintaining effective household systems for schedules, information, and routines – someone skilled at creating systems for household operations is KEY
-
Handling errands, returns, shipping, subscriptions, and general household administration
-
Cooking and managing household inventory, grocery shopping, and stocking (fridge, pantry, toiletries, etc.), with light, healthy meal and snack preparation
-
Maintaining order in the home, including kitchen resets and keeping spaces guest-ready
-
Providing full daily care for the family dog, including coordination of veterinary and grooming appointments
-
Supporting school logistics, seasonal transitions, and particularly during the summer, driving the child to and from activities
-
Managing discretion-sensitive tasks with professionalism and sound judgment
- Travel & Hosting Support
- Create packing lists and coordinate pre- and post-travel home resets
- Coordinate second-home travel preparation, including packing, house readiness, and shipping items ahead as needed
- Support holiday hosting, small events, or birthday celebrations, including setup, cleanup, and ordering
- Track and follow up on missing or damaged travel items
Success in this role comes from anticipating needs, exercising sound judgment, and ensuring the household operates smoothly without requiring constant oversight.
Ideal Candidate & Personality
The ideal candidate is highly organized, proactive, efficient, and an excellent critical thinker who enjoys systems and running a household with precision and care. They are independent, solutions-oriented, and confident in making decisions within established boundaries. Confidentiality and discretion are essential, and professionalism in communication and representation of the household is expected at all times.
This role is best suited for a seasoned professional who is comfortable working independently, values autonomy, and takes pride in quietly running things exceptionally well without the need for frequent check-ins.
While the family values warmth, kindness, and trust, this is not an interactive, social, or companion-style role, but a mutually respectful, professional working relationship built on clarity, trust, and accountability.
Requirements
To be considered, please submit a resume and a thoughtful cover letter describing your fit for this role and relevant experience aligned with the responsibilities and requirements outlined in this position. Applications submitted without a cover letter or without the required experience will not be considered.
